Streltsi, XVII cent. Russia

The Streltsi, from the Russian Strelyat' - meaning to shoot, were founded by Ivan Grozny (The Terrible) at the end of the 16th century and were possibly the world's first uniformed standing army.  They became a kind of retained militia, performing such duties as policing the city and fire fighting in addition to normal soldering.

They were allowed to have businesses and paid no taxes.  They also received clothing and equipment allowances.  A Strelet (singular) was part of a regiment usually named after Colonel in Chief and each regiment had it's own uniform colour, although the uniform cut was standard to all.  Full painting instructions for 13 regiments are included.

For further info. on Stretsi see my article in Military Illustrated Magazine No. 99.
