Welcome to our Stripwood page.  We cut a huge range of timber in both imperial and metric sizes and in the following wood types;

  • Mahogany

  • We normally use Brazilian - for quality there is no alternative.

  • Obeche

  • A pale yellow cream colour with a Mahogany type grain, but softer.  It is  excellent for general modelling work as to takes a stain well and is easy to carve.  It is also good for planking.

  • Cherry

  • Pinkish in colour with a similar texture to Sycamore.  Carves well.

  • Pear

  • Slightly deeper in colour than cherry with virtually no grain.  Also carves well.

  • Spruce

  • The name `Spruce' has, for the modellmaker, covered several species of softwood, often Hemlock. However, other straight grained species are available.

  • Sitka Spruce

  • The ultimate timber for spars.  We cut genuine Sitka Spruce which is lighter and has more inherent spring.

  • African Walnut

  • Not a true Walnut, but of a similar colour.  It has a Mahogany type grain.

  • Cedar

  • Mostly used for planking yacht hulls, it has a light and strong straight grain.

  • Lime

  • Straw colour with little grain feature.  The best wood for carving.

  • Maple

  • From North America, Lighter in colour, slightly harder with straighter grain than Sycamore.  Whitish in colour, but with virtually no grain features in the strips supplied.

  • Tulipwood

  • New for 1999, this close grain wood ranges from dirty white through to grey/green and brown and even black.  It is easily worked for structural work which is hidden or painted.

Please note that because of the nature of timber there can be no guarantee of colour or texture.  The above comments are purely our own appraisal.
